Cardinal Heads to Nationals

The Stanford fencing team heads to Columbus, Ohio, to compete in the NCAA Championships this week.

Fresh off a silver medal at the Havana Grand Prix, Alexander Massialas will aim for a second national championship in the mens foil division. After claiming the NCAA men’s foil title his freshman year, the junior from San Francisco will look to improve on his bronze medal from last season.

Joining Massialas on the men’s side is sophomore Ben Riviere. After barely missing out on the knockout rounds in last year’s regionals, Riviere resiliently won the men’s epee division this season to punch his ticket to Columbus.

Freshman Becca Rose and sophomore May Peterson will try for gold in the women’s epee division. Rose, Stanford’s youngest competitor heading to nationals, won her division in the West Regional.

Sophomores Stephanie Wang and Alexa Rohan also finished first and second, respectively, in their regional. Rohan makes her second NCAA Championships appearance in as many years, while Wang will make her first trip to nationals.

The men’s championship bouts are scheduled for Friday, March 20, and the women’s championship bouts will conclude on Sunday, March 22.
