STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford sand volleyball team swept Saint Mary’s, 5-0, Tuesday, at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal moves to 9-4 on the season, while the Gaels drop to 4-14.
Stanford was previously 0-2 against Saint Mary’s in sand volleyball, which the Cardinal started in 2013.
Sophomore Kelsey Humphreys and freshman Catherine Raquel got things going for the Cardinal with a convincing 21-8, 21-6 win over Maegan Conroy and Hannah Liserra in the No. 4 spot. The pair improves to 5-6 on the season.
Playing in the No. 3 spot, junior Jordan Burgess and redshirt freshman Merete Lutz pushed the Cardinal’s lead to 2-0 with a 21-11, 21-13 victory against the Gaels’ Mileva Popovic and Madi Wilkerson. Burgess and Lutz move to 9-4 overall.
Stanford’s top pair, senior Lauren Birks and junior Brittany Howard, clinched the win with a 21-14, 23-21 decision over Dalas Dodd and Alexis Salmons, moving to 12-6 on the year.
Stanford junior Inky Ajanaku and sophomore Grace Kennedy, playing in the No. 5 spot, improved to 6-5 on the year with a 21-12, 21-7 win over Saint Mary’s Jordan Patchell and Nicole Singh.
At No. 2, junior Madi Bugg and redshirt freshman Ivana Vanjak made it a clean sweep for the Cardinal with a 21-18, 21-16 decision over Mary Hernandez and Clare Powers. Bugg and Vanjak push their record to 11-5.
Stanford closes out its home schedule on Thursday, April 23 against Santa Clara. Play begins at 4:30 p.m. PT at the Stanford Sand Volleyball Stadium.
