STANFORD, Calif. -- Sophomore Brett Hanewich threw his second career complete game Friday night and the Stanford baseball team smacked 15 hits to upset No. 3 UCLA, 6-1, in the first game of a three-game set at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond. Hanewich used 111 pitches to tie his career high with nine strikeouts.

Stanford (18-21, 5-11 Pac-12) won for the seventh time in its last 10 games. An error-free effort coupled with tying its Pac-12 season high in hits gave the Cardinal its fifth victory in its last seven conference outings.

Hanewich (3-3) settled in nicely after throwing 58 pitches through the first three innings. He used a five-pitch seventh and seven-pitch eighth for the opportunity to pitch in the ninth for the first time this season.

“Obviously it was a huge win for us,” said Hanewich, whose swinging strikeout of Kort Peterson ended the game. He sat down the last 10 UCLA hitters after Darrell Miller, Jr. doubled in the sixth inning.

Hanewich stole the spotlight from UCLA ace James Kaprielian, who entered the game tied for 11th in the NCAA with seven wins. All six Stanford runs came against the right-hander, five of which were earned. Kaprielian struck out four, walked one and allowed 12 hits in 5.1 innings.

Zach Hoffpauir went 4 for 4 with two RBI to lead one of the best offensive performances for Stanford this season. Jesse Kuet was 3 for 4, Drew Jackson had his fifth multi-hit game in the last six and Beau Branton and Jack Klein also picked up two hits and a RBI.

Seven of nine Cardinal players in the lineup had a hit and the other two, Tommy Edman and Jonny Locher, contributed a RBI.

UCLA (29-9, 14-5 Pac-12) had jumped to a 1-0 lead on a Trent Chatterton RBI single in the second, before Stanford answered with one in the fourth and four more in the fifth. The first seven batters reached in the momentum-shifting fifth, including RBI singles from Hoffpauir and Branton.

“That was definitely huge,” Hanewich said of the run support. “Not only huge for today, but huge for the whole weekend. Getting that four-run inning helped me with my confidence.”

Branton has at least one RBI in eight straight games.

The Bruins dropped to 21-3 when scoring first.

Marc Brakeman (1-1, 3.15 ERA) is set to face UCLA’s Grant Watson (6-3, 2.15 ERA) tomorrow on ESPNU. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. PT.
