Ty Montgomery • Green Bay Packers
CHICAGO - Ty Montgomery was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. Montgomery was the 30th pick of the round and 94th overall.
Montgomery's name was called after teammate Henry Anderson was selected 93rd overall by the Indianapolis Colts. It marked the first time two Cardinal players were picked back-to-back since 2005, when Alex Smith (71st overall) and Stanley Wilson (72nd overall) were chosen in the third round.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, he grew up in Dallas, Texas, and is working toward his degree in political science.
The senior wide receiver overcame injuries in 2014 to play in 11 games (six starts) and caught a team-high 61 passes for 604 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed 23 times for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Montgomery shined on special teams, returning 12 punts for 238 yards (19.8 yards/return) and two touchdowns, and brought back 17 kickoffs for 429 yards (25.2 yards/return). He produced 205 all-purpose yards against USC and became Stanford’s career leader in kickoff return yardage (2,133).
Montgomery was a CBS Sports All-America second team and SI.com All-America honorable mention selection (all-purpose) and was a Hornung Award finalist. He was also named All-Pac-12 second team as a return specialist and All-Pac-12 honorable mention at wide receiver.
The explosive Montgomery eclipsed 100 yards in all-purpose yards eight times during the 2014 season. In addition to the USC game, he had 206 all-purpose yards against Washington State, 171 against Oregon, 159 against UC Davis, 149 against Washington, 147 against Oregon State, 125 against Arizona State and 110 against Utah.
Montgomery started the season on the Hornung Award, Maxwell Award, Biletnikoff Award and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch lists, and received preseason All-America recognition from SI.com, USA Today, ESPN.com, Athlon and Sporting News.
As a junior, Montgomery played in 14 games and was a consensus All-American. He ranked second nationally with 30.3 kickoff return yards/return and touchdowns (two) and finished ninth nationally with 157.7 all-purpose yards/game. Montgomery also had 61 catches for 958 yards (15.7 yards/catch) and 10 touchdowns and returned 36 kickoffs for 1,091 yards, becoming the first Stanford player to surpass 1,000 yards. His 2,208 all-purpose yards were the third-best total in school history.
Montgomery posted 296 all-purpose yards against Utah, 290 against Washington, 255 against Army and 191 against Cal. In the latter, he scored five touchdowns -- four receiving, one rushing -- to tie the Stanford single-game records for points (30) and touchdowns (5). Montgomery also contributed 115 all-purpose yards against Michigan State in the Rose Bowl.
As a sophomore, Montgomery was slowed by a mid-season injury but played in 11 games with four starts. He had 26 catches for 213 yards and 450 all-purpose yards through the first five games, topped by a 155-yard effort against Arizona. Montgomery also had three receptions for 26 yards in the Rose Bowl victory against Wisconsin and was named All-Pac-12 honorable mention.
Montgomery saw extensive playing time as a true freshman, appearing in 13 games with four starts. He had 24 catches for 350 yards and two touchdowns, and returned 27 kickoffs for 680 yards, including a 96-yard score on the final play at Washington State. Montgomery caught a season-high seven passes for 120 yards and one touchdown against Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl, and was selected the team’s most outstanding freshman.
