STANFORD, Calif. -- Washington swept the Stanford baseball team at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond for the first time ever thanks to a 5-0 shutout Saturday evening. Freshman Mikey Diekroeger’s two singles were the only Cardinal hits in the series finale.
Stanford (11-17, 0-9 Pac-12) struck out only once but was slowed by Washington starter Ryan Schmitten for the first six innings and Brandon Choate (2.0 IP, 1 H) and Troy Rallings (1.0 IP, 0 H) for the final three frames. The sidewinding righty Schmitten allowed a Diekroeger knock and plunked Drew Jackson in the first before retiring the next 16 batters in order.
Diekroeger finished a productive 5-for-9 (.556) series at the plate. The left-handed hitting third baseman leads Stanford with a .329 season batting average and .432 on-base percentage.
Lefty Logan James (2-3) took the loss, despite keeping the Cardinal in the game for the first 4.1 innings. He allowed three runs - two earned - on four hits and six walks. Washington plated two runs in the first when Alex Schmidt lined a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded off of James’ shin. The Huskies added a run in the fifth and two more in the eighth on a two-run homer from Joey Morgan off of reliever Tyler Thorne.
Thorne worked 4.2 innings, his longest outing of the season. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four with flashes of a tight-breaking off-speed pitch.
The teams combined for nine hits to result in the second quickest game of the season for Stanford (2:34). A nice crowd of 1,970 was on hand.
Washington (18-12, 5-7 Pac-12) was led by Braden Bishop's 3-for-3 day. He has reached base in 10 straight plate apperances dating back to the second game of the series.
Stanford has the chance to rebound when it travels to Pacific Monday night as part of a two-game nonconference series. The Tigers (6-23, 5-7 WCC) visit Sunken Diamond Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. PT.
