Fan Appreciation Night

STANFORD, Calif. -- Oregon State jumped to a 5-0 lead Friday and held on for a 5-2 win to spoil the Stanford baseball team’s Fireworks Night at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.  A season-best 3,453 fans came out to enjoy the action and postgame show.

Stanford (22-29, 7-18 Pac-12) outhit Oregon State, 11-8, but stranded 13 runners on base, one off of its high for 2015. Drew Jackson led the way with four hits and Tommy Edman and Matt Winaker each added a pair.

Trailing 5-0, Stanford loaded the bases in the fifth with zero out after a double from Jackson, a walk to Beau Branton and an infield single to short by Edman. Zach Hoffpauir then grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, as Jackson came across, and Winaker singled to short in what proved to be the only RBI of the Cardinal’s evening.

Oregon State (34-14-1, 15-9 Pac-12) was led on the hill by 5.2 strong innings from starter Andrew Moore and at the plate by KJ Harrison’s 2-for-5, two-RBI day. Christian Donahue also had two hits and Michael Gretier picked up two RBI on a single in the fifth.

Harrison’s RBI came on a two-out liner up in the middle in the first, then a long solo home run in the fifth frame. The freshman first baseman has 10 homers and 52 RBI on the year.

After Moore (6-2) allowed the two runs in the fifth, Scotland Church got four outs and Luke Heimlich came in for a six-out save, his fourth of the season. Eight of Stanford’s hits came off of Moore, who is on the 30-man Golden Spikes Award watch list.

Brett Hanewich (3-6) allowed five runs, four earned, in the first 4.1 innings. He struggled with his command, walking a career high seven batters, while allowing six hits and striking out four.

Chris Viall was the bright spot for Stanford’s bullpen. After Tyler Thorne finished the fifth with two outs and no runs, Viall allowed just one hit in four innings, retiring 12 of 16 batters faced.

Stanford looks to even the series tomorrow at 7 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks. Marc Brakeman (1-3, 3.55) faces Drew Rasmussen (5-3, 2.70).
