REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – No. 1 Cal was too tough for No. 12 Stanford as they won all three races at the 82nd Big Row.

“Cal clearly proved why they are ranked No. 1,” said Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian. “They raced at the highest level we have seen here in years. We knew they would be tough going in and we could have raced better, but credit to them for having a great day.”

The Big Row marked the final home competition for three Stanford seniors. Scott Roycroft (earth systems), Kaess Smit (mechanical engineering) and Andrew Terajewicz (biomechanical engineering) all concluded their home racing career. The three individuals have been great contributors to the program over the last four years.

In the varsity eight race, Cal posted one of the fastest times in course history with a 5:31.2. Stanford had its second fastest time at Redwood Shores this year with a 5:48.0, but the Golden Bears were too strong for the Cardinal’s top boat.

The 2V8 race ended about the same away with Cal finishing 16.3 seconds ahead of Stanford. In the 3V8 race, freshman coxswain Ariana Qayumi made her collegiate debut as the Cardinal posted a time of 6:15.5. Cal won the race by a wide margin.

At the end of the day there was an alumni race between Brown and Stanford. The Brown boat featured several rowers from the squad that finished second at the IRA Championships. The Cardinal boat contained three Olympians and six total individuals with World Championship or U-23 World Championship experience. The two boats raced a 2k with Stanford coming out on top.

The three Olympians for Stanford were Jake Cornelius ‘06, Alex Osborne ‘09 and Silas Stafford ‘08. Mark Murphy ‘09, Nate Rooks ‘07 and Alex Syverson ‘11 all rowed for national team as well. The team was rounded out by Rob Meyer ’08 and Ogi Zivojnovic ’09.

“It was fun getting the gang back together,” said Cornelius. “We know a lot of the Brown guys and had a good time racing them.”

Cornelius has been an assistant coach for the Stanford men’s rowing team the last few years and Rooks is a current assistant coach for the Stanford women’s rowing squad.

Osborne and his parents, Al and Nancy, recently donated an eight to Stanford. Alex is the head of customer acquisition at Sapho. Stafford lives in San Francisco and is a geoscientist.

Murphy is the chief operating officer for Oolong. Syverson works as a business analyst at Green Dot Corporation. Meyer does product design for Apple and Zivojnovic is a summer associate at Quinn Emanuel.

The Stanford men’s rowing team will next race at the Pac-12 Championships on Lake Natoma on Sunday, May 17.
