Bonanni Leads Cardinal

DAVIS, Calif. – The Stanford men’s water polo team opened play in the Aggie Roundup on Saturday with a pair of convincing wins over UC Davis and Concordia at Schaal Aquatics Center on the campus of UC Davis.

The Cardinal (10-1) began play against Concordia posting a 20-3 win over the Eagles. Stanford ended Saturday with an 18-6 victory over No. 10 UC Davis.

Senior Bret Bonanni and redshirt junior Adam Abdulhamid each netted a pair of goals and freshman Blake Parrish added a score to give Stanford a 5-1 lead over Concordia after one quarter of play.

The Cardinal added six goals in the second quarter to build an 11-2 halftime advantage.

Three more goals in the third gave Stanford a 14-2 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Stanford was not done, however, recording six goals in the fourth, highlighted by four-straight from redshirt sophomore Justin Roberto in a span of 3:28 of the final period. Redshirt freshman Grady Williams capped the scoring with 56 seconds left, punching in his second goal of the contest to make it 20-3.

Roberto (4), Bonanni (2), Abdulhamid (2), Mitchell Mendoza (2), Reid Chase (2), Kyle Weikert (2) and Williams (2) each had multiple goals, while Marco Stanchi, Spencer Rogers, Sam Pfeil and Parrish rounded out the scoring with a goal apiece for the Cardinal.

Sophomore Oliver Lewis got the start in the cage for Stanford against Concordia, recording eight saves in the win.

Later Saturday, goals from Bonanni, Abdulhamid and Adam Warmoth gave Stanford a 3-1 advantage after the first quarter in its game against UC Davis.

The Cardinal extended its lead to 7-3 by halftime with Bonanni scoring Stanford’s final three goals of the period.

The senior picked up right where he left off with Stanford’s first and last score during a five-goal third quarter for the Cardinal to extend its lead to 12-5.  

Bonanni finished with six goals in the contest to lead Stanford to the 18-6 win. Abdulhamid added three scores, while Mendoza (2), Bolan (2), Parrish, Connor Stapleton, BJ Churnside, Cody Smith and Warmoth rounded out the scoring for the Cardinal.

Junior Drew Holland posted nine saves in the cage for Stanford in the win.

Stanford finishes play in the Aggie Roundup on Sunday with a noon game against Santa Clara and a 4 p.m. contest against San Jose State at the Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus.
