TEMPE, Ariz. - Andi Sullivan and Haley Rosen scored a goal apiece to help lead No. 5 Stanford to a dominating 2-0 victory at Arizona State on Friday night.
The Cardinal (8-2, 2-0 Pac-12) controlled a majority of the possession throughout the game but had trouble finding the finishing touch to get on board. Sullivan broke through in the 74th minute with a perfectly placed left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box to the lower right corner of the goal.
Rosen added a second goal less than five minutes later with a blistering left-footed shot to the upper-right corner of the goal from roughly 22 yards out.
Stanford held advantages over Arizona State (4-5, 0-2 Pac-12) in shots (18-4) and corner kicks (6-2). The Cardinal's backline played well, keeping the Sun Devils attackers out wide and away from the center of the goal. Jane Campbell made the plays needed when called upon in goal and registered one save.
Stanford controlled the game from the start, opening the contest with three quality scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes.
Mariah Lee generated the first two chances, first sending a cross-box pass to the foot of Sullivan who fired high over the crossbar.
Less than a minute later, Lee lofted a nifty chip into the 18-yard box that Kyra Carusa shot on frame but had it cleared off the line by an Arizona State defender.
Jordan DiBiasi created a scoring chance in the 37th minute, fighting for a loose ball inside the 18-yard box and getting a shot off that sailed just wide left of the frame.
Lee continued to be a threat, generating two of the Cardinal's best scoring opportunities in the latter portion of the first half. Sullivan whipped in a cross to the box from the left side of the field in the 34th minute that Lee was able to get her head on and send to the left post. Sun Devils goalkeeper Chandler Morris made a diving effort to make the save.
Three minutes later, Tegan McGrady carried the ball to Arizona State's endline and slipped a pass back through the box to Lee at the top of the box. Lee took a touch to beat her defender and drilled a low shot that just missed the right post.
Stanford continued to push the pace in the second half constantly serving crosses into Arizona State's box and generating shots consistently.
DiBiasi nearly got Stanford on the board in the 52nd minute when she made a run to the back post and found herself on the end of a cross. She connected on a full volley that hit the side netting about a foot from the left post.
Rosen sent a 60th minute corner kick to the head of McGrady, who hit the left post with her shot. Stanford got the rebound and Sullivan fired a right-footed shot from the top left corner of the box that curved just left of the left post.
Megan Turner almost notched her first goal of the season in the 62 minute with a shot to the top right corner of the goal that Morris was just able to tip over the crossbar.
The Cardinal finally broke through with Sullivan's strike in the 74th minute and got an insurance goal from Rosen in the 79th.
Stanford concludes its road trip Sunday at 11 a.m. (PT) when it takes on No. 17 Arizona. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
