STANFORD, Calif. - Averie Collins scored a goal and No. 3 Stanford capitalized on a San Jose State own goal to earn a 2-0 victory Friday night against the Spartans and advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
Kyra Carusa fired a shot on frame in the 17th minute that San Jose State goalkeeper Zoe Makrigiannis got a hand on but could not hold onto. The ball rolled along the goal line but did not completely cross the threshold until a Spartan defender tried to clear the ball from danger but instead hit it into the right-side netting of the goal.
Collins gave Stanford some breathing room in the 44th minute when she scored her third goal of the year on a one-touch shot of a great feed by Ryan Walker-Hartshorn.
"The team had great energy and scored two goals in the first half," said Stanford head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "Everyone made a major contribution to the team so I was happy with the result."

The Cardinal continued to possess the ball well throughout the match and outshot the Spartans 16-3 but settled for just two goals.
The Stanford defense played well and Jane Campbell made two saves in goal to help Stanford earn its 11th shutout of the season. It is Campbell's ninth shutout of the year and 29th of her career, passing Kira Maker (2007-10) for fourth all-time in Stanford history.
Maddie Bauer and Alana Cook were strong in the center of the backline, while outside backs Laura Liedle, Stephanie Amack and Michelle Xiao made regular runs forward to get involved in the attack.
Stanford was aggressive offensively and generated numerous opportunities. Andi Sullivan led Stanford with four shots and nearly scored in the 84th minute when she weaved through defenders in the midfield and hit a low shot that missed the left post by inches.
Along with her assist, Walker-Hartshorn contributed quality minutes at forward and created opportunities for teammates. Megan Turner and Jordan DiBiasi had strong games and were key distributors in the midfield. Mariah Lee's speed was evident down the right sideline as she made regular runs to dangerous areas and created chances throughout the game.
"Overall, it was a really good performance by the entire team," said Ratcliffe.
Stanford will play host to the winner of tomorrow's matchup between No. 13 BYU and Utah Valley.
