LOS ANGELES – The Stanford men’s water polo team out-scored Long Beach State, 4-0, in the first quarter and never looked back, en route to an 18-8 victory over the 49ers in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Men’s Water Polo Championships Saturday in Los Angeles.
Junior Jackson Kimbell scored a season-high four goals to lead the Cardinal, which advanced to the Sunday’s MPSF Championships fifth-place game against UC Irvine at 1 p.m. PT.
Stanford (21-8) out-scored Long Beach State, 9-1, in the first half, using three goals from Kimbell, a pair of scores from Connor Stapleton, Justin Roberto and Blake Parrish, and a goal from Bret Bonanni in the first 16 minutes.
The Cardinal scored six more in the third quarter and added three goals in the fourth to earn the 18-8 victory.
Along with Kimbell’s four goals, Stanford also used multiple scores from Stapleton (3), Parrish (3), Adam Abdulhamid (2) and Cody Smith (2) in Saturday’s victory.
Junior goalie Drew Holland recorded 12 saves in the cage for the Cardinal, before handing it over to Oliver Lewis, who had four saves in the final period.
Bonanni pushed his school-record scoring total 354 with his goal against the 49ers on Saturday.
