Freshmen Feature: Taryn Fitzgerald

Every Friday until the 2015-16 season kicks off, we'll spend some time getting to know each of SWG's four freshmen. Up first is Taryn Fitzgerald, who talks about her experience at Stanford so far and what she's looking forward to in the coming year.

Fitzgerald with brother

Tell us a little about yourself!
I'm from Houston, Texas, and have lived in the same house my whole life! I have one brother, Blake, who is 21. In my free time, I love shopping and just hanging out with my friends.

What are you most proud of?
I’m really proud of how far SWG has already come in the gym and can’t wait to show what we’ve been working on this competition season!

What’s been the biggest surprise about Stanford?
I had no idea Stanford has so many traditions! The Band Run, rollouts, Full Moon on the Quad, Dorm Storm, the list goes on and on!

What are you thinking of studying? Any favorite classes so far?
I’m considering majoring in product design. I haven’t started taking classes specifically related to this major yet, but I’m looking forward to having classes in the design studio later on!

What are some of your goals this year - academically, gymnastically?
My goal this year is to keep a balance in my life between gymnastics, academics and my social life. I'm finding that all three of these are very important in allowing me to fully enjoy my time at Stanford. This upcoming gymnastics season, my goal is to contribute to the team as much as possible and hopefully help the team make another Super Six appearance!

Role model?
My role model is definitely my mom. She always puts other people’s needs before her own and is a hardworking, loving mom.

Favorite food?
Mexican food for sure! Mexican restaurants are everywhere in Houston, and I plan to have Mexican food as my first meal in Houston when I go home for Thanksgiving break!

Anything else you want to tell us?
I’ve really enjoyed getting closer to my freshman class. Almost every day after practice, we go to dinner together, and I love the fact that we  will be together for four years!

I find the Stanford campus absolutely beautiful. Its architectural beauty is unmatched by any other university I’ve seen. I feel so fortunate to be a student here!

I started gymnastics when I was two years old in “mommy and me” classes. I began competing when I was in third grade, and here’s a picture of “little gymnast me!”
