Cardinal Takes Third

RENO, Nev. - Wrestling at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Sunday, Stanford finished third as a team with 91 points. Illinois won the team title with 152 points, while Central Michigan was second with 119.

Stanford had four placewinners, including fifth-ranked Jim Wilson at 165 pounds (2nd), Paul Fox at 149 pounds (3rd), No. 18 Nathan Butler at heavyweight (3rd) and Keaton Subjeck at 174 pounds (4th).

Wilson secured two falls, a major decision and a decision to make his way into the finals. There, he dropped a tough 3-2 decision to 17th-ranked Steven Rodrigues of Illinois. The Lodi, California native is now 11-2 overall on the season.

Fox, a redshirt freshman from Gilroy, California, went 7-1 in the tournament to move to 16-5 overall in his rookie campaign. He posted an 11-3 major decision over Cal Poly's Kyler Hansen and a 5-3 decision against Arizona State's Christian Pagdilao to reach the quarterfinals where he met eighth-ranked Colin Heffernan of Central Michigan. Fox dropped an 8-5 decision to Heffernan to fall into the consolation bracket. Fox then won four straight to secure a third-place finish.

Butler notched four falls and a decision to also place third on Sunday. His only hiccup was a 4-3 loss to Wyoming's Tanner Harms in the semifinals. He is now 10-2 on the season with six of his wins being pins.

Subjeck reached the quarterfinals with a 16-3 major decision over Oregon State's Ali Alshujery and a fall in 26 seconds against Jordan Luhrs (unattached). In the quarters, Subjeck was shut out by 11th-ranked Nate Jackson of Indiana. In the consolation bracket, he posted two falls, including an upset over No. 16 Ben Stroh of Wyoming, and a technical fall before dropping a 9-5 decision to Oklahoma State's Chandler Rogers in the third-place match. Subjeck is now 11-5 on the season.
