SAN DIEGO – Both of Stanford men’s rowing's entries in the San Diego Crew Classic advanced to Sunday’s Grand Final with impressive performances Saturday on Mission Bay.

"Excellent racing in today's heats for the one and two varsity eights,” said Stanford head men’s rowing coach Craig Amerkhanian. “Our team goal is to get on the podium in Sunday's finals. Our team is 'All In' to race fierce tomorrow."

Stanford’s varsity eight, ranked No. 15 nationally, placed second in its heat on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s Grand Final and compete for the Copley Cup. The Cardinal’s top boat raced down the 2,000-meter course in 6:01.143 to place second behind No. 2 California. Michigan Rowing Association (6:08.519) was third in the heat, while UC Santa Barbara (612.477) placed fourth.

Stanford will face California, Yale, Drexel, Michigan Rowing Association, Oregon State UC Santa Barbara and Brock in Sunday’s Grand Final at 10:08 a.m. PT.

The second varsity eight took second place in its heat on Saturday, finishing the course in 6:16.013. Yale (6:08.122) captured the heat, while Santa Clara (6:28.057) placed third, UC San Diego (6:33.834) finished fourth and San Diego State (6:58.977) was fifth.

The Cardinal second varsity eight moves on to Sunday’s Grand Final where it will compete for the Sharp Cabrillo Cup at 9:28 a.m. PT against California, Yale, Oregon State, Michigan Rowing Association and Drexel.

Stanford's third varsity eight will face California, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and San Diego State on Sunday at 9:04 a.m. PT.
