Quick Start at Pasatiempo

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Maverick McNealy and Franklin Huang are among the top-10 individuals through 18 holes at the 70th annual Western Intercollegiate, which started Monday at Pasatiempo Golf Club. McNealy, second overall, went 4-under while seventh-place Huang carded a 2-under to pace the Stanford men’s golf team.

Stanford collected a 5-under 345 at the par-70 course playing at 6,615 yards and sits second behind clubhouse leader Oregon (-9).

McNealy’s 66 led the field for most of the day until Oregon’s Aaron Wise closed with a 7-under 63. McNealy, who started his round on the third hole, went birdie-par-birdie-par-birdie-par-eagle to go to 5-under. He added two more birdies and three bogeys to his scorecard.

Huang was 1-over after beginning his round on the par-3 fifth, but hit a hot streak with four straight birdies to move to 3-under. Two more bogeys and a birdie left him at 2-under.

Viraat Badhwar, who is tied for 21st, had four birdies in his first 10 holes before settling for an even-par 70. Brandon Wu matched Badhwar’s round with a steady 70.

Four birdies highlighted Jeffrey Swegle’s 1-over performance, and David Boote had three birdies during a 4-over showing. Boote’s birdies came on holes seven, eight and nine.
