Offensive Outburst in 10-0 Win

STANFORD, Calif. – Six pitchers combined for a three-hitter and were aided by a seven-run third inning as Stanford baseball cruised to a 10-0 mid-week victory over San Jose State at Sunken Diamond.

Every hitter in the Stanford starting lineup finished with at least one hit and one run as the Cardinal won for the sixth time in the last seven games to improve to 18-9 on the season.

Junior Chris Viall got his first start of the year and did not allow a run or hit in three innings of work, while striking out five. It was a scoreless game when he walked off the mound after the top of the third.

But in the home half of the inning, Stanford exploded for its highest scoring inning of the season, which hit its halfway point on Tuesday night.

Sophomore first baseman Matt Winaker started the scoring session when he laced a two-run triple into the right field corner. He scored one hitter later when Mikey Diekroeger singled up the middle for a 3-0 lead.

Quinn Brodey singled, and Diekroeger later scored on a balk. Brodey came home to make it 5-0 when Jonny Locher reached on an error. Then back-to-back RBI doubles by senior Austin Barr and freshman Duke Kinamon capped the seven-run, six-hit inning.

The Cardinal tacked on three more in the fifth. Junior Jack Klein doubled off the wall in center field to score a pair, and senior Tommy Edman, who finished with three hits for the second straight game, added an RBI single.

Junior Tyler Thorne (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. He allowed just two hits and a walk, and struck out one.

Four other Stanford relievers split the last four innings. Senior John Hochstatter, sophomore Keith Weisenberg, freshman Kris Bubic and sophomore Colton Hock each pitched a scoreless inning.

NOTABLES: This is Stanford's largest shut out win since a 16-0 victory at Fresno State on March 3, 2012 ... Stanford has scored 10 or more runs four times this season.

NEXT UP: After a four-game road trip, Stanford hits the road again for four more road games. A three-game set at Arizona, Friday-Sunday, is followed by another non-conference Tuesday matchup at Cal. The Cardinal returns home again for a weekend series with Arizona State, April 22-24.
