Pitchers, Seniors Lead Card

STANFORD, Calif. – In their final weekend at Sunken Diamond, a pair of seniors came up with some clutch hitting to push Stanford baseball to a 2-1 series-opening win over Oregon on Thursday night.

Seniors Austin Barr and Jonny Locher each had two hits, including singles in the seventh to break a 1-1 tie. That aided an impressive night on the mound for junior Brett Hanewich, sophomore Andrew Summerville and sophomore Colton Hock, who combined to hold the Ducks to three hits and did not allow an earned run.

In a tie game in the bottom of the seventh, Locher and Barr hit back-to-back singles. Sophomore Matt Winaker drew a walk to load the bases with one out. The next Cardinal at the plate, freshman Nico Hoerner, poked an opposite-field single to right, and Locher scored the game-winning run.

Hanewich struck out three and allowed just three hits and an unearned run in six innings. Summerville (5-2) earned the win as he recorded four outs and did not allow a hit, while Hock retired all five batters he faced in just 16 pitches to earn his fifth save of the season.

A wild play in the top of the fifth led to the first run of the game. Oregon put runners at the corners with two outs. The runner at first took off for second and Hanewich stepped off the mound. The runner at third tried to sneak home, and Hanewich threw to the plate, but it sailed to the backstop. One run scored, while the other runner rounded third and fell, and the Cardinal tagged him out in a rundown.

Stanford tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the sixth. Winaker led off with a bloop single to center. He was bunted to second by Hoerner, and then traded places with junior Tommy Edman when the shortstop lined an RBI double into the left field corner.

NEXT UP: Fireworks Night. Stanford takes on Oregon on Friday at 7 p.m. The annual fireworks show at Sunken Diamond will take place immediately after the game. On Saturday, the Cardinal will celebrate Senior Day. In addition, the first 100 kids will receive a free pack of Stanford baseball player cards.
