2016-17 Schedule Revealed

STANFORD, Calif. – The Stanford wrestling program and ninth-year head coach Jason Borrelli have announced its schedule for the upcoming 2016-17 season. The Pac-12 Networks will announce its broadcast selections at a later date and the wrestling schedule will be finalized at that time.

Stanford will wrestle in 13 duals and compete in some of the nation's most competitive collegiate tournaments this year.

The Cardinal will have six home dates, highlighted by an outdoor dual on Nov. 5 during Fan Fest of the Stanford vs. Oregon State football game, a conference dual against Arizona State on Jan. 22 and the Pac-12 Championships being held in Maples Pavilion on Feb. 26.

"I am very excited about this year's schedule, as it offers a great mix of dual meets and tournaments," explained Borrelli. "We are thrilled to announce that we will be hosting our season opener against Cal Poly outside during the football fan fest. The 'Takedown and Touchdowns' event was a huge hit during the 2014-15 season and we look forward to making it even better this year.

"Additionally, we are looking forward to an early season test against Penn State on the road. We actively seek out the best competition, so any time you get the opportunity to compete against the defending national champion it's a positive. Adding the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational back on the schedule and combining it with the Southern Scuffle allows our student-athletes a chance to compete in arguably the two toughest regular season events of year. Undoubtedly, this will help prepare our guys to finish high on the podium in March."

The outdoor dual against conference foe Cal Poly, which will begin two hours prior to the football game (which is still TBD), will also serve as the season opener for the Cardinal, which enters the season ranked No. 11 as a team by WIN Magazine.

After a trip to State College, Pennsylvania (Nov. 13) for a dual against defending national champion Penn State, which has won five of the past six NCAA team titles, Stanford will host Purdue on Friday, Nov. 18 before heading to Fresno, California for the Roadrunner Open (Nov. 20).

The Cardinal wraps-up 2016 at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invite (Dec. 2-3) and the Reno Tournament of Champions (Dec. 18).

Stanford will bring in 2017 at arguably the toughest regular season tournament in the country, the Southern Scuffle. The Cardinal will head back to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jan. 1-2.

The Cardinal will continue conference competition on the road at CSU Bakersfield on Jan. 8 before a trip to the East Coast where it will face Princeton in New York City (Jan. 14) at the New York Athletic Club. Stanford will also take on Drexel and Penn (Jan. 15), which is coached by former Cardinal assistant Alex Tirapelle, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Home duals against Air Force (Jan. 20) and Arizona State (Jan. 22) will be followed by road competition at Boise State (Jan. 27), Oregon State (Jan. 29) and Utah Valley (Feb. 10). Stanford's Senior Day is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 12 versus San Francisco State.

The Cardinal will host the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday, February 26 at Maples Pavilion. The NCAA Championships will be held March 16-18 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.

"It is worth noting my excitement to host the Pac-12 Championships at Stanford," said Borrelli. "We are very optimistic about our team and believe February 26th will be a special day for the Stanford wrestling program!  We hope everyone will mark their calendars and make it a point to attend the event."

Stanford returns three All-Americans to its roster, including Joey McKenna (3rd, 2016), Connor Schram (8th, 2016) and Jim Wilson (8th, 2015), and five NCAA qualifiers overall.

All dates and times are still subject to change. All times listed are Pacific Time.
