Women's Gymnastics

TBT: Jennifer Bloom

Each month, Stanford women's gymnastics will check in with an alumna to find out what she's been up to since graduation and how her time with the team and at Stanford has impacted their life. This week's #ThrowbackThursday is Jennifer Bloom (1988-91).

What did you major in at Stanford?
Sociology, with an emphasis on organization basis of behavior.

What is your favorite place on Stanford's campus? Why?
The Quad. I love being there and thinking about all the amazing people and stimulating minds that have passed through there over the years. I like to imagine all of the incredible conversations that have taken place there.

Favorite Stanford tradition?
The Axe.  It's such a long standing tradition that speaks to so many people.  Both of my parents went to Cal, so I have been following the Axe my whole life.  I am happy to say that for most of the 29 years I have been on the Stanford side we have maintained possession of it.

Favorite SWG memory?
Nailing my bar routine at my last home meet, senior year. I had added a new release move and stuck the dismount. People in the crowd were standing up, cheering, and holding up "10" signs. I definitely got a rush and I still get chills remembering that special moment.

Most beneficial thing you learned from being a part of SWG?
SWG taught me to be tough, strong and determined. Looking back on my four years at Stanford, I can't believe how much I accomplished and how successful I was. As a member of the team I learned that even when tasks in front of you feel insurmountable, you can succeed with hard work, commitment, and belief in yourself.

Those lessons have given me courage to face and overcome challenges that I face in my life today.

What aspect of Stanford do you miss the most?
I miss the constant change and challenges of everyday life at Stanford student-athlete. It was always so stimulating engaging in discussions with dormmates, friends, and classmates.  I always really loved the constant variety in my classes and assignments.

Most significantly, I miss working out in the gym, with the constant support of my teammates. As a student-athlete it was easy to measure your improvement and accomplishments. I loved the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment I felt when I learned new tricks and perfected my routines, all with the comradery of my teammates.

What are you up to now?
I have lived in Davis, California, for the past five years, after having lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for 17 years.  I have been married for 25 years and I have two wonderful children, age 20 and 17.  I have been a very involved mom in my kids' lives, while working mostly part-time in the nonprofit sector.  I have worked in healthcare, education and mission-driven nonprofits.
