PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Jeffrey Swegle and Brandon Wu each won individual matches Tuesday at the Cypress Point Classic, but the Stanford men's golf team fell to UCLA in the final round of the event, 16-8.

USC won the team title at famed Cypress Point Club, downing Georgia Tech 19.5-4.5 in singles play. USC prevailed over Alabama in fourball competition, and got by UCLA in foursome action.

Stanford opened the event with a win over Cal in fourball competition, and then fell to Georgia Tech in foursome play.

"It was a huge honor for our program to be part of such a prestigious event," said Conrad Ray, Stanford's Knowles Family Director of Men's Golf. "It is also commendable to see the Cypress Point Club giving back to the amateur and collegiate game. The course was an amazing backdrop for some of the top collegiate teams to compete.

"We could have played better as a team, but the experience in match play for our guys on a challenging course is very valuable. It will be useful for us as we move towards the NCAA Championships in the spring."

Swegle secured his win over Hidetoshi Yoshihara, 3-1. Wu overpowered Spencer Soosman, 3.5-0.5.

Viraat Badhwar dropped a close one to Tyler Colleier, 3-1. Bradley Knox and Franklin Huang were blanked, while Maverick McNealy fell to Cole Madey, 3.5-0.5

The Cypress Point Classic was a bracketed match play event hosted by Stanford and featured Alabama, California, Georgia, USC, UCLA and Wake Forest. The eight teams competing were pre-seeded No. 1 through No. 8 in order by average ranking between Golfstat and Golfweek rankings seven days prior to the event. Winners moved forward in the bracket, losers moved to the consolation bracket.

The first two rounds were played Monday. Round one was contested with fourball (best ball) matches. Teams competed in foursomes (alternate shot) matches in round two. Round three featured singles matches.

Stanford returns to action when it travels to the Gifford Collegiate (Nov. 7-9) in Napa Valley, California.
