STANFORD, Calif. - Junior running back Christian McCaffrey was named to the American Football Coaches Association's All-America second team, as announced Wednesday.
McCaffrey, who joined Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson as the AFCA's only repeat honorees, also earned All-America accolades from The Sporting News, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America and the Associated Press.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and selects teams in all five of its divisions. Beginning this year, the AFCA has started selecting a first and second team. The teams are chosen exclusively by head coaches.
McCaffrey, CoSIDA's Academic All-American of the Year, leads the nation with 211.6 all-purpose yards/game and ranks fourth nationally with 145.7 rushing yards/game. His 2,327 all-purpose yards rank second in Stanford history, only bested by his NCAA record of 3,864 last season. Despite missing six quarters this season, his 1,603 rushing yards are tops in the Pac-12 and fourth-most in a season in school history.
Stanford finished the regular season 9-3 overall and 6-3 in the Pac-12 to reach the postseason for the eighth straight year. The Cardinal faces North Carolina in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 30. The game will be televised on CBS at 11 a.m. PT.
