Cardinal Downs Dragons

PHILADELPHIA –Bonus points from Peter Russo, Joey McKenna and Paul Fox helped No. 15 Stanford over power Drexel, Sunday, in a 27-9 dual victory at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.

Stanford won seven of the 10 bouts to improve to 5-1 on the season, while the Dragons fell to 7-4.

Redshirt junior Keaton Subjeck got things started for the Cardinal at 165 pounds with a 3-2 decision over Austin Rose. Subjeck, who is ranked 18th nationally, registered a first-period takedown and an escape in the third in the win. He moves to 5-0 in duals and 14-4 overall.

At 174 pounds, redshirt senior Peter Galli was active in an 11-6 decision over redshirt freshman Ebed Jarrell. Galli held a 4-2 lead after the first period and recorded a reversal to start the second. Jarrell cut the lead to 6-5 after two periods, but chose to start the third in the neutral position. Galli continued to be the aggressor in the match, notching two more takedowns in the third and finished with the riding time advantage. Galli remains undefeated at 174 pounds this season (3-0) and improves to 17-4 overall.

Drexel scored its first points of the dual at 184 pounds, where Alex DeCiantis turned in a 10-3 decision over redshirt senior Zach Nevills. 

Stanford added to its lead at 197 pounds, where redshirt senior Josh Marchok won a 3-3 decision on criteria (riding time) over Joshua Murphy. Each wrestler scored an escape during regulation, the first set of tiebreakers and the second set, forcing the decision to go to Marchok who held 12 seconds of riding time. 

The heavyweight match-up between 10th-ranked Nathan Butler and Drexel's Joey Goodhart was a repeat of the 197-pound bout, but with the Dragons coming out on top. Goodhart held the riding time advantage after two scoreless sudden victory periods and four tiebreakers.

There was a lot of action at 125 pounds, where No. 14 Gabriel Townsell recorded a 9-5 decision over Tanner Shoap. Townsell's win increased the Stanford lead to 12-6 after six bouts.

Russo added to the Cardinal lead with a fall in 6:51 over Brendan Hasson at 133 pounds. Russo was in control of the match after he rode out Hasson in the second period and tallied the escape in the third. It was the third fall of the season for Russo and his first dual win. 

McKenna, ranked third nationally, put together another dominating performance in a 19-3 technical fall over Vincent Foggia at 141 pounds. The Towaco, New Jersey native led 9-2 after the first two periods. He tacked on another takedown, eight near fall points and riding time in the win. He moves to 20-1 overall and remains undefeated in duals at 5-0.

After No. 18 Matthew Cimato shut out Tommy Pawelski, 5-0, at 149 pounds, Fox closed out the dual with an 11-2 major decision over Willie Davis at 157 pounds. Fox scored four takedowns, an escape, a stalling point and riding time as he improved to 18-10 on the season.

Stanford will immediately head over to the Palestra for a dual against Penn, beginning at Noon PT on ESPN3.
