SEATTLE, Wash. – A dominant performance by Tom Fawcett and the No. 15 Cardinal helped lead Stanford to its fifth 4-0 win of the year as it swept No. 37 Washington Friday afternoon.
Stanford (14-5, 4-1 Pac-12) opened strong in doubles with No. 63 Tom Fawcett and Yale Goldberg blanking Jake Douglas and Piers Foley 6-0. UW answered with a win at No. 2, but it came down to No. 3 where the Cardinal team of Brandon Sutter and David Wilczynski. The duo was down 5-1 in the breaker as well as on match point, but came back to win 7-6(10) in thrilling fashion to take the point.
"Doubles was extraordinarily close," stated Taube Family Director of Men's Tennis Paul Goldstein, "and the cold and windy weather made for an adverse atmosphere that pushed us to be stronger mentally today."
The Cardinal dominated Washington (12-8, 1-4 Pac-12) in singles with straight set wins at Nos. 1 and 3 by Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski. Brandon Sutter came through to play the clincher for the fourth time this season, topping Amit Batta 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to complete the sweep.
"I'm proud of the team today battling through hard conditions on the road," continued Goldstein "we have a very important match coming up in a place that's tough to play at, and our focus from now until Sunday is completely on Oregon."
The Cardinal continues Pac-12 play Sunday where it will face the No. 23 Ducks at 12 p.m. PT in Eugene, Ore.
