EUGENE, Ore. – David Wilczynski claimed wins in doubles and singles, but No. 15 Stanford couldn't withstand a surge back in singles by the No. 23 Oregon Ducks as the Cardinal fell 4-3 Sunday afternoon in Pac-12 action.
The Cardinal (14-6, 4-2 Pac-12) rallied up for doubles play, taking a 6-1 win at No. 1 before Oregon (17-5, 3-3 Pac-12) took a 6-4 win at No. 2. Stanford grabbed the doubles point off a 6-3 win by Brandon Sutter and David Wilczynski over Akihiro Tanaka and Armando Soemarno at the three spot.
"Today was a disappointing result against Oregon," stated Paul Goldstein, the Taube Family Director of Men's Tennis, "we had a lot of guys in difficult spots – Sameer was injured and gave it all he had, and Jack Barber returned to the line-up facing an opponent who played some outstanding tennis. We had our opportunities, but were unable to finish and we now need to return home and prepare for Cal on Saturday."
The Ducks started the fight back in singles with a win at No. 4 before David Wilczynski made it 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 3. Oregon knotted it again with a win at No. 1 and took the lead with a three-set win over Sameer Kumar at the two position.
William Genesen tied it 3-3 after rolling to a 6-2, 6-4 win at the No. 5 spot, but it was Ethan Young-Smith taking a three-set win over Jack Barber at No. 6 to clinch it.
The Cardinal will close out the regular season next Saturday as it travels to Berkeley to face No. 12 California. The match is set for a 3:30 p.m. PT start and will be aired live on Pac-12 Networks.
