NCAA West Men's Qualifiers Opens in a new window NCAA West Women's Qualifiers Opens in a new window

STANFORD, Calif. – Thirty-two Stanford track and field athletes – 21 women and 11 men – plus a relay team, have qualified for the NCAA West Prelims, the meet that determines the NCAA Championships field.

The West regional, in Austin, Texas, on May 25-27, is one of two in the country, along with one in Lexington, Kentucky. Athletes qualified by achieving the top 48 marks from each half of the country. The exceptions are the relays, in which 24 teams advanced. After scratches were determined, the fields were completed Thursday.

The top 12 in each event advance to the NCAA Championships, creating a 24-participant field for each event. The top eight relay placers in each regional advance. The NCAA Championships will be June 7-10 in Eugene, Oregon.

Stanford has eight among the top-12 seeds. For the men: Grant Fisher (No. 5, 5,000 meters), Michael Painter (No. 8, hammer), and Jaak Uudmae (No. 11, long jump). For the women: Mackenzie Little (No. 1, javelin), Elise Cranny (No. 2, 1,500), Olivia Baker (No. 4, 800), Christina Aragon (No. 6, 1,500), and Lena Giger (No. 9, shot put).

Stanford has six qualifiers in the women's 1,500 alone – Cranny, Aragon, No. 16 Malika Waschmann,  22 Rebecca Mehra, No. 35 Maddy Berkson, and No. 36 Catherine Pagano.

The Stanford throwing crew had eight qualifiers, including Tristen Newman, who was a double qualifier, in the men's hammer and shot. Danielle Katz also advanced in two events, the women's 5,000 and 3,000 steeplechase.

Stanford's first-time NCAA West Prelims qualifiers are: Trevor Danielson (javelin) and Michael Painter (hammer) for the men; and Missy Mongiovi (400), Sarah Walker (800), Aragon (1,500), Catherine Pagano (1,500), Fiona O'Keeffe (5,000), Sophie Chase (5,000), Abbie McNulty (10,000), Rachel Reichenbach (high jump), and Jenna Gray (javelin) among the women.
