Chiney Checks In

"Nothing is the end of the world." Chiney Ogwumike uttered those words last winter after it was discovered a left Achilles tendon injury suffered while playing in China would keep her sidelined this season. But while one door closed, another opened and Ogwumike has taken advantage of her time away from the court.

Vice president of the Women's National Basketball Players Association in addition to everything below, Chiney shares some of what she's been up to of late. Hello Nerd Nation!

I recently was hired by ESPN to anchor their flagship show SportsCenter for sports fans across Africa. Every day on SportsCenter Africa, we deliver millions of sports fans across the continent the latest and greatest news from the world of sport - from the NBA and NFL to international soccer and top global competitions. I love this job because it reflects who I am. I am a Nigerian-American female basketball player who loves the world, different cultures, sports and current events. In this role, I hope to inspire the rising generation across the continent of Africa, especially young girls, to pursue their passions and dreams. It can truly open doors and create opportunities - as basketball has done for me.

I also am an ambassador for UNICEF Africa and NBA Africa and a board member of a non-profit called Shooting Touch. All of these groups use the game of basketball to provide opportunities, educate and inspire kids throughout Africa.

In my journey as a professional athlete, there have been some bumps in the road. But the most important lesson that I learned at Stanford is that no matter what life throws at you, never settle and always strive for more. I learned from Coach Tara and Dr. Condoleezza Rice, my international relations major advisor, that I could have the best of both worlds - give my all to my team on the court, while also pursuing a career and life off the court. That mindset prepared me for my future. And for that, I am forever grateful.

This pic was taken right after my little friend said she had to wait because there were only boys shooting on the court... I told her, "grab a ball."
