Defensive Duo Honored

STANFORD, Calif. – Sophomores Tierna Davidson and Lauren Rood were named Pac-12 Players of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Davidson, who assisted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Washington on Friday, earned Defensive Player of the Week honors, the first such honor of her career.

In the 86th minute with the game still scoreless, her clever turn in midfield opened up space to move forward. Gliding away from her marker, Davidson played a perfectly weighted through ball to the foot of Michelle Xiao, who crossed to Carusa for the deciding goal.

Davidson has started the last 11 games alongside Alana Cook at center back – the duo has helped Stanford concede just two goals in that span, while the Cardinal's 11 shutouts on the season are tied for fourth in the nation.

Rood also played a big hand in the shutout, earning Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week honors in the process. Rood has allowed one goal all season season – her 0.14 goals-against average leads the Pac-12 and ranks second in the nation.

Following Carusa's goal, Washington launched a dangerous counter attack that left Rood one-on-one with the Huskies' forward. Rood preserved the lead with a brilliant kick save, her third and most important stop of the evening.

Stanford continues its 2017 campaign on Thursday when it hosts Oregon at 6 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks. The Cardinal then hosts Oregon State on Sunday at 1 p.m. on Pac-12 Networks, with live statistics available at GoStanford.com.
