Silver at Head of the Lake

Head of the Lake Results Opens in a new window

SEATTLE – The Stanford varsity eight and second varsity eight took home the silver under winter-like conditions at the 38th annual Head of the Lake Sunday on Montlake Cut.

The cold weather conditions in Seattle worsened during the event, causing the regatta to be shortened to just 10 of the 70 scheduled events. However, both the Cardinal eight and second varsity eight were able to complete the course.

"This was a great experience for our team," said Stanford head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "We raced in near snowy conditions, finishing second in the varsity eight and second varsity eight. Our team has four months to declare our national intentions."

The varsity eight, with a crew of Ryan Buchanan (coxswain), Drew Taylor (stroke), Brennan Wertz (seven-seat), Jovanni Stefani (six-seat), Trey Holterman (five-seat), Bart Scherpbier (four-seat), Guy Wuollett (three-seat), Ryan Cardiff (two-seat), and Allen Reitz (bow-seat), finished the course in 5:31.225. The Cardinal placed second behind Washington's time of 5:14.284. Oregon State finished third with a time of 5:40.534.

The second varsity eight, with a crew of Allison Tielking (coxswain), Joseph Matan (stroke), Julius Stener (seven-seat), Martin Amethier (six-seat), Nick Kingsley (five-seat), John Coffey (four-seat), David Dunn (three-seat), Spencer Burdge (two-seat) and Will Spencer (bow-seat) completed the course in 5:53.238 to take second out of five boats. UW won the race with a time of 5:30.131, with Oregon State placing third with a time of 6:00.999.

The Head of the Lake was the second fall regatta for the Cardinal, which also competed in the Head of the Charles last month. The spring championship season begins with the San Diego Crew Classic March 24-25, 2018 on Mission Bay in San Diego.
