ST. LOUIS - Redshirt sophomore
Paul Fox has become Stanford wrestling's 20th All-American, Friday, at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships at the Scottrade Center.
Fox defeated 15th-seeded Archie Colgan of Wyoming, 5-4, in the first set of tiebreakers in the Round of 12. Unseeded at 157 pounds, Fox took a 4-3 lead with a takedown late in the third, but Colgan was able to escape to force overtime. After no score in the sudden victory period, Colgan went down to start the 30 second tiebreaker period. Fox rode out Colgan and then was able to get the deciding escape for the win in the second 30 second period.
Fox, a native of Gilroy, California, becomes the 10th underclassman in program history to reach All-America status. He will wrestle for seventh place on Saturday morning after dropping a 15-6 major decision to No. 2 seed Michael Kemerer of Iowa. Fox will face 14th-seeded Sal Mastriani of Virginia Tech in the seventh-place bout.
Sophomore
Joey McKenna was shut out 8-0 by eighth-seeded Jaydin Eleman of Missouri in the Round of 12. The only freshman All-American in program history, McKenna finishes his sophomore season at 31-3. He is now 58-6 during his time on The Farm.
Session V of the NCAA Championships begins at 8 a.m. PT on Satruday. Stanford set a program record with nine NCAA qualifiers in 2017.
