SEATTLE – Valarie Allman twice broke the UW Indoor Preview record in the women's 20-pound weight throw and was among seven Stanford winners in the season-opening track and field meet Saturday at Dempsey Indoor.
Allman, who competed in the discus for the U.S. at the World Championships last summer, threw 64-1 (19.53 meters) to win. Allman, a fifth-year senior, took the lead on her first throw and broke the record on her second, throwing 63-11 (19.48m), exceeding the 62-10 ¾ (19.17m) by Portland State's Caressa Sims in 2008. After a pair of fouls, Allman went even farther on her fifth try, on a throw that would win the competition by more than five feet.
It was part of a big day for Stanford throwers, including a strong runner-up performance by Lena Giger, who was the top collegian and second overall in the women's shot put at 56-9 ¼ (17.30m). The distance was a lifetime best by nearly a foot for the All-American and makes her the No. 4 performer on Stanford's all-time absolute list, trailing only Olympians Jillian Camarena, Carol Cady, and Pam Dukes. It makes Giger No. 3 indoors at Stanford, behind Camarena and Dukes.
Tristen Newman also established shot put personal best, throwing 61-4 ¼ (18.70m). He also was the top collegian, and was fourth overall. His distance was a best by eight inches and moved him into sole possession of the No. 2 spot on Stanford's all-time performers' list and No. 3 on the school absolute list, behind former world-record holder Terry Albritton and ex-NFLer Garin Veris.
Besides Allman, Stanford's two other women's individual winners were Olivia Baker in the 600 (1:28.72) and Marisa Kwiatkowski in the triple jump (41-2 ¼, 12.55m).
The Cardinal swept the 4x400-meter races and the weight throws.
Half of the membership on the winning relays teams were freshmen. The women's team included freshmen Ashlan Best and Carolyn Wilson in the middle legs, sandwiched by veterans Missy Mongiovi at lead off and Gaby Gayles on anchor. They ran 3:41.54.
The men's team closed with two freshmen -- Louis Stenmark and anchor Gabriel Navarro -- while clocking 3:12.46. Double winner Julian Body and Frank Kurtz were the first two legs. Body, a sophomore competing in his hometown, earlier captured the 400 in 48.21.
Joining Allman as a Stanford weight throw winner was Michael Painter, who threw the 35-pound version 58-10 ¼ (17.94m).
Nine Cardinal made their collegiate debuts – and all but one were true freshmen. The most successful was Wilson. In addition to her relay triumph, Wilson placed second to Baker in the 600. Wilson's 1:29.71 makes her the No. 2 performer in school history in the seldom-run event, passing two-time NCAA outdoor 800 runner-up Claudia Saunders to reach that spot.
Big-time recruit Brandon McGorty was fifth in a stacked 1,000, running 2:23.56 in a race won by Drew Windle, who ran the 800 for the U.S. in the 2017 World Championships.
The long jump was another event of strength for Stanford. Jaak Uudmae was second in the men's event (23-8 ¾, 7.23m) and Daryth Gayles, whose sister Giana was among those in making a Stanford debut, was third in the women's at 18-5 (5.61m).
