SEATTLE – Jaak Uudmae won the men's long jump and Michael Painter the men's 35-pound weight throw to highlight Stanford performances at the UW Invitational indoor track and field meet Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor facility at University of Washington.

Uudmae, an Estonian graduate student in computer science, had his best jump on his first jump, leaping 24-3 (7.39 meters). It was a personal indoor best by nearly three inches and was enough to withstand the 23-11 ½ (7.30m) on the final jump by Eastern Washington's Keshun McGee to win.

In each of his two meets so far, Uudmae has been the top collegian, placing second overall at the season-opening UW Indoor Preview in the same building. However, the season hasn't been quite as smooth as his results would indicate.

Uudmae came down with the flu and missed several days of training, thought he already had enough in the bank to get him through.

"He had the best fall of his life," said associate head coach Michael Eskind, who coaches the Cardinal jumpers. "He's healthy, strong and his speed levels are much higher than they've been. We just need to put all the pieces together."

Uudmae solidified his spot at No. 7 on the Stanford all-time indoor performers' list in the long jump, while Painter entered the school top-10 list at No. 8 in the weight throw.

Painter, an Englishman who also is a graduate student in computer science, won with a throw of 62-8 (19.10m), a personal best. He took the lead on his first throw of 62-6 ½ (19.06m) and improved it on his second.

Also particularly impressive for Stanford was freshman Brandon McGorty. Racing in his first collegiate 800, McGorty captured second in 1:50.99. Teammate Hari Sathyamurthy, a redshirt freshman, won the second-fastest section, in 1:51.73.

Lena Giger continued her strong season with a second-place in the shot put. She threw 54-7 ½ (16.65m).
