Ticket Punched

BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 12 Stanford men's tennis team punched its ticket to the ITA National Indoor Championships with a 4-1 victory over No. 22 Tulane Monday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of California.

After downing Oregon (4-0) on Sunday, the Cardinal (3-0) continued its strong start with Monday's win over the Green Wave in the ITA Kickoff Weekend regional final match. With the victory, Stanford earned a berth in the ITA National Indoor Championships for the first time since 2012. The national event will be held Feb. 16-19 on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle.

"I am so happy for these guys," Stanford's Taube Family Director of Men's Tennis Paul Goldstein said. "The guys have worked their tails off to earn this. We have had this weekend circled on our calendars for several months. The way they came out and executed at the level they executed at today and throughout the weekend to get to the National Team Indoor Championships makes me very grateful for their efforts."

The doubles team of senior Tom Fawcett and freshman Axel Geller made quick work of its opponent with a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles, and the Cardinal duo of senior David Wilczynski and freshman Timothy Sah clinched the point moments later with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.

Stanford and Tulane traded points early on singles as junior Sameer Kumar captured the Cardinal point with a 6-3, 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot.

Stanford picked up its third point at No. 2 singles as Geller downed Tulane's Ewan Moore, 6-4, 6-3.

Fawcett, ranked No. 101 nationally and playing his second top-25 opponent in as many days, provided the clincher. The senior defeated No. 21 Constantin Schmitz in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, to send Stanford to Seattle.

Stanford looks to continue its momentum as it hosts No. 5 USC and No. 6 UCLA on Friday and Sunday, respectively, at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
