ST. LOUIS – Senior midfielder Andi Sullivan became the fourth Stanford player to win the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy on Friday, the highest honor in college soccer.
"I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to attend Stanford," said Sullivan, who hails from Lorton, Virginia. "I would like to thank head coach Paul Ratcliffe, our whole staff and my teammates for always supporting me and making this such an incredible experience. I would also like to thank our whole support staff and everyone who supported me in my recovery – this award is as much yours as it is mine. It is an honor to be up here alongside Savannah and Jessie, and I would like to thank the Missouri Athletic Club for putting on such an amazing event."
She joins Kelley O'Hara (2009), Christen Press (2010) and Teresa Noyola (2011) as the only Stanford women to win the award. Last season, Sullivan was a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, and was a semifinalist in each of the past three seasons. Other finalists include Jessie Fleming of UCLA and Savannah McCaskill of South Carolina.
"I would like to congratulate Andi on capping an amazing career at Stanford by winning the Hermann Trophy," said head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "Andi is an incredible student-athlete and everyone at Stanford is very proud of her. I look forward to following her professional career and wish her nothing but the best going forward."
Sullivan's haul of postseason awards continues after winning the Senior CLASS Award and Honda Sport Award for women's soccer. She is a finalist for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year and Honda Cup, both of which will be awarded in June.
Sullivan took a deeper role in 2017 after leading the team in goals (11) and points (29) in 2016. She controlled the tempo of play, interchanged with any of Stanford's four defenders, broke up play with her tackling ability, accurately delivered set pieces and was a threat to make powerful runs into the box.
She appeared in all but three games this season while on duty with the United States National Team – she was called up on Oct. 11 for games against South Korea and Oct. 31 for games against Canada. Along with returning junior Tierna Davidson, Sullivan was recently called into the United States National Team camp on Jan. 6.
Sullivan is a three-time first-team All-American, four-time All-Pacific region selection, four-time first-team All-Pac-12 selection, the 2016 Pac-12 Player of the Year, the 2014 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, a three-year captain (2015-17) and a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention (2015-17). Sullivan was named a Hermann Trophy semifinalist on Nov. 28, joining teammates Davidson and Catarina Macario on the list.
Sullivan concluded her illustrious Stanford career by lifting the College Cup on Dec. 1 after Stanford defeated UCLA, 3-2, and was a member of the All-Tournament team after scoring the second goal in the final. She has 20 career goals, 19 assists and eight game-winning goals. She scored three goals this season, including Stanford's second in a 4-0 win over Penn State to advance to the College Cup on Nov. 24.
Jon Bakero of Wake Forest was the winner on the men's side – Stanford center back Tomas Hilliard-Arce was a finalist for the award after leading the team to its third straight national championship on Dec. 10.
