Solid Start

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Senior Franklin Huang fired a 3-under 68 on Tuesday to lift Stanford into a tie for fourth after the first round of The Prestige at PGA West Resort.
 
The Cardinal posted a best four-out of-five total of 2-over 286 at the Norman Course and trails pacesetters Oklahoma State and Oregon by three strokes in the 16-team event co-hosted by Stanford and UC Davis.
 
The Cardinal B squad is 11th after combining for a 14-over 298.
 
Huang tallied a team-high six birdies in cool but sunny conditions, reeling off three in a row at 10, 11 and 12. He is tied for second individually, one shot behind Sam Triplett of Northwestern (67).
 
Senior Henry Shimp carded five birdies, four coming on the back nine, and recorded an even-par 71 for a share of 13th place. Junior Isaiah Salinda and senior Bradley Knox checked in with 72s and are tied for 17th.
 
Freshman Ashwin Arasu (73) is knotted for 27th, while senior Jeffrey Swegle and junior Brandon Wu (75) are tied for 43rd. Junior Chris Meyers (76) is tied for 58th, followed by sophomore David Snyder (77), who tied for 63rd. Sophomore Dakota McNealy (79) is tied for 73rd.     
 
The final round is Wednesday. The Cardinal A team starts at 8:25 a.m. PT and plays with defending champion LSU and Northwestern, while the B unit begins at 8:14 a.m. and is paired with UC Davis and Iowa State.
