Eighth In Cabo

SAN JOSE del CABO, Mexico – Stanford received strong performances from the bottom of its lineup and stands eighth Sunday after the first round of the Querencia Cabo Collegiate at Querencia Golf Club.
 
Playing in the four and five spots, freshman Ashwin Arasu fired a 1-under par 70 and sophomore David Shimp added a 70 to help the Cardinal post a 6-over 290 total in the 15-team, 54-hole tournament.
 
Top-ranked and defending champion Oklahoma State combined for an 8-under score of 276 to grab the lead. Stanford is five shots out of third.
 
Arasu forged three birdies and two bogeys and is tied for eighth. Shimp carded a team-best four birdies and is tied for 15th.
 
Junior Isaiah Salinda (73) is tied for 34th, senior Franklin Huang (76) is tied for 59th, and junior Brandon Wu is tied for 66th.  
 
Matthew Wolff of Oklahoma State earned the individual lead with a 6-under 65 on the sunny and sometimes breezy day.
 
The second round begins Monday with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT. The Cardinal will be paired with South Florida and Wake Forest. The final round is Tuesday.
