The student-athlete experience is complex and intersectional. We partner with student-athletes in their transition through college by providing exceptional educational opportunities that maximize the Stanford experience, foster well-being, and help prepare for leadership in a complex world.

Collaborating with world-class faculty, expert support staff, and award winning coaches we provide a holistic experience that addresses the unique needs of student-athletes with demanding schedules.

We expect all Stanford student-athletes to achieve the following core competencies by the end of their time on campus:

•  Transition effectively to life as a Stanford student-athlete.
•  Develop grit and emotional intelligence through the development of strategies, skills, and experiences.
•  Clearly and confidently understand post-graduate pathways and resources.

AARC Advisors are academic advisors assigned by team who serve as a resource in various ways, helping students with course selection, scheduling conflicts, major selection, four-year plans, tutorial resources, etc.

Tutoring

Tutoring

Tutoring services at Stanford are free for all students, including tutoring in 10 different academic subjects, foreign language one-on-one practice, and specific writing and speaking presentations at the Hume Center for Writing and Speaking. The athletic department provides aid through student-athlete specific tutorials offered in the Athletic Academic Resource Center (AARC). Faculty Fellows Program

The Faculty Athletics Fellows Program launched in the 2016-2017 school year. Each varsity sports team is assigned one or more Faculty Athletics Fellows (Stanford academic faculty who self-select into the program), who build rapport with their team and serve as liaisons and mentors on academic resources, opportunities, and challenges student-athletes face both inside and outside the classroom. Every year, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) coordinates a dinner for Faculty Athletics Fellows and student-athletes to foster relationships between the faculty and student-athletes.

We prepare student-athletes for success after Stanford by connecting them with opportunities that encourage them to explore postgraduate pathways, including:

Student-Athlete Career Fair: Held specifically for student-athletes once a year, this event offers a unique opportunity for career discovery and allows employers the opportunity to spark new connections and revive relationships made at previous events.

Resume Review: The Athletic Academic Resource Center (AARC) hosts professionals from the Stanford Beam Career Center to review and provide feedback on student-athletes’ resumes.

Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM): Provided in partnership with the Block S Society this platform connects alumni with current student-athletes to provide prolific professional connections.

Career Scoop: This is a weekly email provided by the athletic department to student-athletes with the latest internship, job, and professionally-oriented activities.

Stanford BEAM (Bridging Education, Ambition & Meaningful Work): Career educators at BEAM connect with students in appointments and meetups to help them explore career paths, identify and apply for opportunities, and cultivate personalized networks that shape their professional journey.

New Student-Athletes

Transitioning to Stanford as a new student-athlete presents unique challenges; we support new student-athletes in a number of ways:

New Student-Athlete Orientation: New student-athletes attend a special dinner as part of their general New Student Orientation with upperclassmen student-athletes. Activities include a keynote student-athlete speaker, introductions by key athletic department staff, and Stanford trivia.

Transitioning Out of Sport Workshop

Senior Send Off with AD Bernard Muir: The Athletic Director, Bernard Muir, hosts a meal at his home for graduating student-athletes to thank them for their contributions to Stanford Athletics.

Graduation Pre-Game Meal: The athletic department staff host graduating student-athletes for a final meal at the Sports Café before heading to the commencement ceremony graduation morning.

Block S Society: The Block S Society is a group whose members are Stanford varsity student-athlete alumni. The moment a varsity student-athlete graduates or leaves Stanford, they become a member of the Block S Society. The mission of the Block S Society is to honor varsity student-athlete alumni for their contributions to Stanford Athletics and keep them connected to all things Cardinal through social, educational, and philanthropic endeavors.

Alumni Mentoring: Provided in partnership with the Block S Society, this platform connects alumni with current student-athletes to provide prolific professional connections.

Sport Psychology

The mission of Stanford Athletics Sport Psychology Services is to provide comprehensive sport psychology services to support student-athletes in becoming their best selves; to promote mental health, emotional wellness, and optimal performance; and to contribute to an inclusive athletic department.

Stanford Athletics has had an ongoing and collaborative relationship with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences to provide integrated behavioral health services to Stanford student-athletes, including this full-service sport psychology program.

The Sports Nutrition Department provides teams and individuals with evidence based nutrition counseling and education to guide food choices that optimize health and performance goals. Sports Medicine

Stanford’s Sports Medicine is dedicated to providing the best possible medical care for student-athlete injuries and illnesses. Team Physicians, Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists, and Sports Scientist all support student-athletes in making decisions on participation status, treating athletic injuries, rehabilitation, testing and evaluation, and more.

Creating opportunities that allow our students to better understand, articulate, and enhance what it means to be a leader in a global, complex world

SAAC

SAAC is a group of committed Stanford student athletes who represent and advocate for quality experiences for all Stanford student- athletes, serving as a conduit between the student athlete community and the Stanford Athletics administration. SAAC reps specialize in focus areas including Community Service, Cardinal RHED (Resilience, Health, and Emotional Development), Special Projects, and Social Events.

Community Service: This committee focuses on engagement with the community and volunteering opportunities for student-athletes. Notable programs that this group manages include Trick or TREE-t, A,B Trees, Children’s Champions, and various game days with local children.

Cardinal RHED: This committee focuses on the mental and psychological aspects of competing student-athletes, working closely with Stanford sports psychology. They plan events such as Game Faces, in which student-athletes volunteer to publicly share their journeys through life as a student-athlete at Stanford.

Social Events: This committee is placed in charge of the two main events of the athletics’ social calendar: Dancing with the Card, a dance off of athletic teams to raise money for Camp Kesem, and Stanny’s, the end of year athletic awards put on by student-athletes.

Faculty Relations: This committee manages miscellaneous projects that SAAC takes on, including namely the annual Faculty Athletic Fellows Dinner.

PAE Mentors

PAE mentors are crucial to the success of the PAE program. Underclass mentors are Stanford upper-class student-athletes and come from a variety of backgrounds and sports teams. Having been in their shoes only a few years prior, the undergraduate mentors serve as invaluable resources for the first-year student-athletes with regards to the overall Stanford undergraduate experience. Graduate student mentors come from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, School of Law, School of Medicine, School of Education, or are involved in a Co-terminal Master’s or PhD program at the University. The majority of the graduate student mentors were previously student-athletes as undergrads and understand how to leverage those skills and experiences in the working world, which they share with their first-year student-athlete mentees.

ACE Ambassadors

The ACE Ambassador role provides ACE alumni a pathway to continue their commitment to public service and civic engagement by providing leadership, mentorship, and service opportunities that support wider ACE efforts at Duke and Stanford and beyond. ACE Ambassadors have the opportunity to stay connected with other ACE alumni, ACE program staff and future cohorts of their ACE program as well as provide guidance and input on decisions that impact the ACE program.

Leadership By Design

Leadership By Design is an interactive leadership training led by Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) executive coaches. All participants of the program do a deep dive into the patented FIRE framework (Feedback/Influence/Resilience/Empathy), an innovative approach to leadership development with influences from the GSB and Stanford Design School. This is offered yearly to student-athletes in SAAC.

Stanford Alumni Mentoring

The Block S Society is a group whose members are Stanford varsity student-athlete alumni. This Block S Society group within Stanford Alumni Mentoring (SAM) connects current Stanford varsity student-athletes with student-athlete alumni mentors to help guide them in managing demanding schedules, promoting academic excellence and helping prepare for future employment opportunities through professional development.This group was formed to help student-athletes successfully navigate their life beyond The Farm and allow all former varsity student-athletes to connect with one another.
