Downed in Overtime

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Kelsey Murray set a school record with six assists, and hat tricks from senior Dillon Schoen and freshman Galen Lew led a furious second half comeback, but No. 12 Stanford lacrosse fell in overtime to No. 16 Colorado, 11-10, in a first-place matchup at Stanford Stadium on Friday night.

The visiting Buffaloes scored the game-winner with 11 seconds remaining in the first overtime to move into sole possession of first place in the Pac-12. Colorado (10-4, 7-1 Pac-12) is now one game ahead of Stanford (11-4, 6-2) in the conference standings with two games remaining.

Stanford was fighting from behind throughout the night as the Buffaloes scored the first three goals and five of the first six. Stanford got back-to-back goals from Lew and Schoen before the half to pull within 5-3 at the break.

Colorado went up 7-3 with the first two goals of the second half, but Schoen, in her final home weekend on The Farm, answered back with two goals in less than two minutes.

The visitors got one back, but Lew and sophomore Daniella McMahon scored 32 seconds apart to bring Stanford within 8-7 with 14:35 to play.

Colorado got two more to go up 10-7, but did not score a goal in the final 12:49 of regulation. Meanwhile, sophomore Areta Buness scored twice to make it 10-9 with 6:18 to play, and McMahon tied it with 1:13 to go.

Both teams had several chances in overtime before the Buffaloes ended it. The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak for the Cardinal, dating back to a March 9 defeat at Colorado.

Murray accounted for all six of Stanford's assists as the Cardinal outshot Colorado, 35-22, and held a 32-23 advantage in ground balls. The Buffaloes led 12-11 in draw controls as junior Genesis Lucero won six for the Cardinal, and junior Julia Massaro won three. Freshman Ali Baiocco had five ground balls, while Allie DaCar made seven saves and scooped up a team-high eight ground balls.

McMahon caused four turnovers and had two ground balls in addition to her two goals.

Stanford hosts Senior Day on Sunday at Stanford Stadium. The Cardinal will honor its nine seniors prior to the game against Oregon, beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
