SEATTLE, Wash. – In a battle of two of the top-15 crews in the nation, Stanford fell to Washington in three races Friday evening on the Montlake Cut.

"Tremendous performance by the varsity eight tonight," said head coach Craig Amerkhanian. "At 1300 meters in we were locked into a tight race. At that point the crews clashed oars and Washington established the margin of victory."

Stanford and Washington race for the Andrea and Everett Peter Paup Cup, named in honor of former UW and Stanford coxswain Pete Paup, a U.S. Marine veteran who finished second in the coxed pair at the 1956 U.S. Olympic Trials.

Stanford's varsity eight, ranked No. 12 nationally, fell to third-ranked Washington on Montlake. Stanford raced down the cut with a time of 5:43.323, behind the Huskies' 5:36.161.

The Cardinal squared off with Washington's second varsity eight in the second race of the evening. Washington won the race by open water, registering a time of 5:35.788 to Stanford's 6:00.672.

The third varsity eight boat was also in action in Seattle, taking on both Washington's third varsity eight and freshman eight boats. Stanford finished third in the race with a time of 6:09.887. The Huskies' 3V8 took first with a 5:45.859 and their freshman eight boat finished second with a time of 5:50.739.

The team returns home next weekend to host the Stanford Invitational, which takes place on April 14 and 15 at Redwood Shores.
