STANFORD, Calif. – The 13th-ranked Stanford golf team will be driving two hours south to compete in the NCAA Stockton Regional hosted by the University of Pacific, May 14-16 at The Reserve at Spanos Park, it was announced Wednesday. The Cardinal is seeded No. 3.
It marks the 20th consecutive year Stanford has received a regional bid.
"We've accomplished one of our goals," said Conrad Ray, the Knowles Family Director of Golf. " Now we have to keep checking those boxes."
Stockton is one of six regional sites hosting a combined 81 teams and 45 individuals. Stanford will be joined by top-seeded LSU (6), Alabama (7), USC (21), Oregon (37), TCU (32), Colorado (44), Kansas (42), Kennesaw State (56), Iowa State (54), North Carolina-Greensboro (91), UC Irvine (130) and North Dakota State (181). The low five teams and top individual not a member of an advancing team qualify for the NCAA Championships, May 24-30 at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
"It's a strong field and we'll have to play well," Ray said. "We all have high expectations. Every year college golf gets deeper and more competitive."
In 10 tournaments this season, Stanford recorded eight top 10 showings, finishing sixth or higher seven times. The Cardinal was runner-up at the Nike Collegiate Invite and Saint Mary's Invitational, placed third at The Goodwin, fourth at the Pac-12 Championships, and fifth at The Prestige.
Stanford will be shooting for its third consecutive regional title and sixth overall after sharing it with Baylor last year on its home turf at the NCAA Stanford Regional at Stanford Golf Course. Brandon Wu and Franklin Huang of the Cardinal tied for fourth individually, while Isaiah Salinda placed 20th.
Stanford has advanced to the NCAA Championships in 10 of the last 13 years. The Cardinal has captured eight national crowns, most recently in 2007.
The other regional sites are: the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio hosted by Ohio State; the Traditions Club in Bryan, Texas hosted by Texas A&M; Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma hosted by Oklahoma; Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina hosted by North Carolina State; and Reunion Resort in Reunion, Florida hosted by UCF.
