SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Stanford's track and field teams begin competition at the three-day NCAA West Preliminary Round on Thursday at Sacramento State.
Of the 48 qualifiers in each individual event, the top 12 placers in each of the nation's two regionals -- the other is in Tampa, Florida -- advance to the NCAA Championships June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.
Stanford is sending 38 individuals – 23 women and 15 men -- plus three relay teams. Harrison Williams already has qualified for NCAA's in the decathlon.

Stanford notes:
Stanford has high expectations for the NCAA Championships and its buildup to that meet begins here, with individuals settled into their events and the beginning of qualifying.
Stanford has 10 first-team All-Americans in individual events indoors or outdoors who are still alive. The women have seven (listed with their first-team events that they will compete in): Valarie Allman (discus), Olivia Baker (800), Christina Aragon (1,500), Elise Cranny (1,500), Vanessa Fraser (5,000), Lena Giger (shot put), Mackenzie Little (javelin), and Fiona O'Keeffe. The men have three: Grant Fisher (5,000), Sean McGorty (5,000), and Harrison Williams (decathlon).
That's why Stanford has the potential to score points at NCAA's, especially the women. But the first step is in Sacramento and advancing as many as possible.
Mackenzie Little, Jenna Gray, or Virginia Miller can extend a Stanford NCAA qualifying streak in the javelin to eight years, following Eda Karesin (2011), Brianna Bain (2012-14), Smith (2015), Little (2016, 2017), and Gray (2017). Little, the three-time Pac-12 champion. Little is the No. 1 seed.
