Cardinal Capsule: Jaiden Delaire

Cardinal Capsule: Sam Beskind Opens in a new window

Leading up to the men's basketball regular-season opener on Nov. 6, GoStanford.com will profile all 15 student-athletes on the team and learn more about their interests, experiences and goals.

In our second edition of our Cardinal Capsule series, we get to know freshman Jaiden Delaire from Granby, Connecticut.

What is something people may not know you about you?
I am really good in ceramics and pottery. I learned a great deal in my AP art class in high school. I am not great at drawing or painting, but when it comes to ceramics and sculpting, I really get into it.

Why did you choose Stanford?
Stanford offers the best balance for academic and athletic excellence. My goal is to become the best student and the best basketball player I can be. I want to interact with people all over campus and integrate myself as much as I can into the campus culture.

While you won't declare a major until your junior year, do you have an area of interest in mind you may want to pursue in your studies?
I took a good look at the major offerings before I made my decision to come here. I am intrigued by the management, science and engineering major path. I also have an interest in economics and finance. Yesterday was the first day of classes, so it is still all new. I am excited to learn and explore.

In your first couple of weeks at Stanford, what has your experience been like?
Every day here is exciting. I learn something new each day, whether it is a new bike trail to get back to my dorm, a new building on campus, a new place to eat or where to go. There are so many opportunities here and I hope to explore as much as I can.

What are the main differences in practices at the college level?
Since I joined the program in August, I missed the summer sessions, but the coaches did a great job of preparing me for what to expect. I had 11 days here on campus before classes started this fall and I accomplished a lot. I improved my conditioning, strength and got a great feel for what to expect for the first official practice. The staff here has been so supportive along the way. Practices are high energy and competitive.

What do you miss most from home?
My family. I am close with my family. I have always tried to be there for my little brothers Elliyas, Tri-kel and younger sister Chloe. It will be difficult being so far away, but we have stayed in constant communication. Elliyas and I talk every day and still play video games online. We shared our goals for the next couple of months and will talk frequently what we are doing to achieve those goals.

What age did you first begin playing basketball?
I was really young. My dad really got me into basketball. At third grade, he would drive me to workouts really early in the morning before class. Basketball has always been fun for me.

Is there any significance behind No. 11?
It was my grandfather, Frank Mingel's track number in high school. He ran a 49 second 400 meters in high school. I have always looked up to him and wear the number in honor of him. I played soccer growing up through eighth grade as well and were the No. 11.

Nickname?
J or Quis because my middle name is Marquis. Call me either and I will respond.
