Three in the Semis

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Stanford's Real Woods, Dominick Mandarino and Nathan Traxler have punched their tickets into the semifinals of the Southern Scuffle, presented by Compound Sportswear, Tuesday, at McKenzie Arena.

In total, eight Cardinal wrestled in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. As a team, Stanford sits in seventh place with 41 points after the first day of competition.

Woods, wrestling unattached at 141 pounds, registered a pair of major decision victories to reach the quarterfinals. He won by medical fofeit over 12th-ranked Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State and will face 18th-ranked Nick Gil of Navy in the semifinals. The true freshman is now 8-0 on the season.

Mandarino began the day with an 8-4 decision over Air Force's Jacoby Ward in a pigtail match at 157 pounds. He edged Rider's Gino Fluri, 3-2, before dominating North Carolina's Michael Goldfeder, 16-0, to move into the quarterfinals. The sophomore came out on top of a hard-fought battle with Virginia Tech's BC LaPrade, who had to default due to injury in the second set of tiebreakers. Mandarino, who is 15-4 on the season, will take on No. 1 Jason Nolf of Penn State in the semifinals.

Traxler, who is ranked eighth nationally at 197 pounds, notched back-to-back technical falls to advance to the quarterfinals. Seeded third in the tournament, Traxler held off No. 6 seed Jacob Seely of Northern Colorado, 7-5, and will meet 11th-ranked Dakota Geer of Oklahoma State in the semifinals on Wednesday. The redshirt sophomore is now 16-3 on the year.

Also wrestling in the quarterfinals for Stanford were Gabriel Townsell (125 pounds), Mason Pengilly (133 pounds), Requir van der Merwe (149 pounds), Paul Fox (157 pounds) and Shane Griffith (165 pounds).

There were some notable Cardinal performances in losses from Tuesday, including redshirt freshman Dalton Young coming up just short in a 4-3 decision against 15th-ranked Roman Bravo-Young of Penn State in the opening round. Griffith also turned some heads as he hung with two-time national champion and top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph of Penn State, dropping a 6-4 decision in the quarterfinals.

The Cardinal will be back in action Wednesday morning with a consolation round beginning at 7 a.m. PT before the semifinals get underway at 9 a.m. PT.
