HONOLULU, HI – No. 11 Stanford concluded play at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic, dropping its final matches on Sunday against Saint Mary's, 5-0, and No. 5 Hawai'i, 3-2.
Against the Gaels, three Cardinal pairings forced a third set.
Stanford then dropped its last match of the tournament to No. 5 Hawai'i, 3-2.
The Sandbows secured the first three matches early with straight-set wins at the Nos. 3, 4 and 5. The first and second flights each rallied to three sets, eventually earning Stanford's only two points of the day.
Charlie Ekstrom and Sunny Villapando, at the No. 1, came back from a second set loss to win a back-and-forth third set battle, 20-18.
Next up for the Cardinal is the Pac-12 South Beach Invitational. Stanford will face Oregon and No. 9 USC on Saturday and No. 14 Arizona on Sunday. All matches will be aired on the Pac-12 Networks.
