Seven in the Second Half

Scoresheet Opens in a new window

TEMPE, Ariz. – Three players had hat tricks and No. 2 Stanford scored seven second-half goals to beat No. 9 Arizona State, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon.

Aria Fischer, Makenzie Fischer and Ryann Neushul each scored three times for the Cardinal (12-1, 2-0 MPSF), which moved to 2-0 in conference with the victory and 26-0 all-time against Arizona State.

Stanford scored the game's first three goals and seemed to be in control before the Sun Devils responded with a three-goal run of their own to make it 3-3 at the half. Neushul (6:15), Kat Klass (5:13) and Makenzie Fischer (1:16) rattled the cage to put the Cardinal up 3-0 in the first quarter. Peggy-Jean Allin scored with under a minute to go in the first quarter for Arizona State, which added two more in the second without allowing a Stanford score.

The teams traded goals coming out of the break and it was 6-6 when Maud Koopman scored for ASU with 1:13 left in the third quarter. Neushul sparked the Cardinal to its first multi-goal lead since its game-opening run when she scored a 6-on-5 goal to close the third (0:34) and then added an even-strength strike to open the fourth (5:29).

Stanford match its largest advantage when Aria Fischer scored at 5:06 in the fourth to make it 9-6. Borbala Kekesi and Makenzie Fischer alternated goals to close the game.

The Cardinal is off next week and returns to the pool on Saturday, March 23 at noon when it hosts Harvard. Stanford makes its 2019 Pac-12 Networks debut at home on Monday, March 25 against UC Irvine (12:30 p.m.).
