SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The javelin has been a Stanford track and field strength for years and that's not going to change this season.

Defending NCAA champion Mackenzie Little and NCAA runner-up Jenna Gray duplicated their national placings as the Cardinal opened its outdoor season at the Hornet Invitational on Saturday.

Little's winning distance of 194-2 (59.20 meters) was the second-longest of her career, behind only her school-record toss of 198-0 (60.26m) that won the 2018 NCAA title. Gray was second in 173-0 (52.75m).

Little's top throw was on her sixth and final attempt and was an improvement of nearly six feet. It is the longest throw among collegians this year and will be hard to top.

On the men's side, redshirt freshman Liam Christensen made his Stanford debut and promptly won the competition at 226-4 (69.00m) and jumped into Stanford's all-time performers' list at No. 4. Christensen won the 2017 U.S. junior national championship at this same Sacramento State venue.

Christensen took only one throw and passed on all the others. He won the competition by 29 feet.

Besides Little, Stanford had three other women's winners: Ashlan Best in the 200, freshman Jordan Fong in the hammer, and sophomore triple jumper Aria Small, who had a personal best of 42-5 ½ (12.94m) (PB, No. 5 Stanford AT).

Fong's 181-10 (55.44m) came Friday in her collegiate outdoor debut and places her No. 5 all-time. Also Friday was Best's victorious 23.49.
