CHARLESTON, S.C. - Stanford opened the season with three Cardinal going undefeated at the Battle at The Citadel, Sunday, at McAlister Field House.
Overall, 12 Cardinal placed in the tournament as Stanford was first as a team with 144 points. American (116.5) was second, while Old Dominion (109.5) finished third.
Redshirt freshmen Real Woods (141) and Shane Griffith (165) made their collegiate debuts with tournament victories. Redshirt junior Nathan Traxler placed first at 197 pounds. Redshirt junior Requir van der Merwe and redshirt sophomore Foster Karmon were runners-up at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively.
Woods, who is ranked 17th at 141 pounds, defeated No. 15 Sa'Derian Perry of Old Dominion in the finals with a 2-1 decision. He began the day with a fall in 2:26 against Old Dominion's Yarhoski Aldiva before posting a 24-3 technical fall over The Citadel's Jacob Dado. He reached the finals with a 3-2 (TB2) decision against American's Salvatore Profaci.
Griffith, Stanford's highest-ranked wrestler at No. 9, was equally as impressive with a fall in 2:15 over American's Timothy Fitzpatrick in his first bout of the day. He followed up with an 8-0 major decision against Old Dominion's Kellen Ekern in the quarterfinals. An 8-2 decision against The Citadel's Dazjon Casto put Griffith in the finals where he edged Old Dominion's Shane Jones, 3-2.
It was Traxler versus Old Dominion in Charleston. The St. Charles, Illinois, native entered the season ranked No. 10 at 197 pounds and cruised to the finals with a pair of technical falls over Santino Morina of (unattached) Old Dominion (19-4) and Rivery Henry of Old Dominion (16-1; 4:40). He held on to defeat Old Dominion's Tim Young in the finals, 5-4, earning the riding time point for the victory.
Four placed third for the Cardinal, including true freshman Jackson DiSario at 125 pounds who was 3-1 on the day with a fall in 58 seconds in his collegiate debut. Senior Brandon Kier, wrestling down at 133 pounds, was 5-1 and turned in a 3-1 sudden victory decision over NC State's Kai Orine, who was competing unattached, in the third-place bout.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens, who was a member of the U.S. Junior Greco World Team over the summer, took third at 157 pounds with an 8-0 major decision over teammate Gabe Dinette. Eischens opened the tournament with a fall in just 39 seconds over The Citadel's Grant Speer.
Redshirt senior heavyweight David Showunmi was also third for the Cardinal, posting a 6-3 decision over NC State's Owen Trephan, who was wrestling unattached. Showunmi was 5-1 on the day, including a 4-2 victory over teammate Trevor Rasmussen. Rasmussen took sixth at heavyweight and was 2-3 overall.
Stanford opens its dual season on Sunday, Nov. 10 at No. 3 Ohio State. Action begins in Columbus at 4 p.m. PT on BTN Plus.
