Chalk Talk With Wesley Stephenson

STANFORD, Calif. – Wesley Stephenson is a sophomore from Naperville, Ill. and competes on the uneven bars and balance beam. She won her first collegiate event last year on beam against Arizona. Wesley was a 2018 National Merit Finalist and a member of the French Honors Society.

Who inspires you and why?
I get inspiration from anyone around me who is working hard to become a better version of themselves – especially when their end goal is being able to help others. It serves as motivation to me because seeing them do better makes me want to do better as well. I met a lot of people like this in the dorm I lived in last year as a freshman.

Everyone has an app idea. What's yours?
I've heard other people have this idea as well, but I would really like to a make Search-by-humming app a possibility. Being able to hum or say "dun-dun-duhhhhh" into a search engine and have it give you what song you're trying to figure out would be helpful.

Fun fact?
My go-to accessory is a pair of sunglasses! I think just having a cute pair sitting on your head can complete at outfit. I have at least five pairs that I have been switching through lately.

Which Stanford athlete would you change places with for a day and why?
I'd trade places with my teammates Morgan Hoang, because she is an amazing floor worker and that's an event I don't do much anymore. It would be cool to go out to a meet and perform a great routine like hers!

Favorite Netflix (Hulu, HBOnow, etc.) show or movie?
I haven't watched too many shows or movies on streaming services, but during the summer I would log into my xfinity app and watch "Euphoria" every week. It's an intense show, but I think the characters' stories and the way the show is put together is beautiful.

What is your dream job and why?
Something where I can give back to the community. I'd love having a job that helps to support and lift up marginalized communities and communities of color, because equal opportunity and fair treatment for all is something I believe this country still needs to work on.

Favorite song lyrics OR song that describes you and why?
"Beauty in your soul, girl a blind man could love you." I like this lyric and basically any lyric from Xavier Omär's "Blind Man," because it appreciates the beauty that comes from someone's personality rather than being totally consumed by outward appearances. Physical beauty is appreciated in the song, but the emphasis is on inner beauty.

What is the most interesting thing in your wallet?
My stamp card for T4 (one of my favorite boba shops in the area). After 10 stamps, you get a free drink!
