DAVIS, Calif. – No. 9 Stanford held the lead until the final rotation, but came up just short on Sunday in the NorCal Classic at The Pavilion.
The Cardinal finished the five-team meet with a score of 194.700, but was edged out by No. 3 Cal in the last event. The Bears tallied 194.950.
San Jose State claimed third at 193.850, followed by No. 22 and host UC Davis at 192.800 and No. 23 Sacramento State at 189.675.
"It was a tight scoring meet and a great lesson and environment for our team early in the season," said head coach Tabitha Yim. "Overall, I feel the scores do not accurately reflect the progress that was made on the competition floor. Our team was able to cover each other after missed routines, and we had some highlight reel performances. We are hungry to keep building."
Stanford received another strong showing from freshman Chloe Widner, who established a career-high on vault with a score of 9.900 to tie for second, bettering last week's mark of 9.850. She recorded 9.700 or higher in every event and tied for second in all-around at 39.075.
Also earning career-bests were junior Grace Garcia on bars (9.750) and sophomore Madi Brunette on vault (9.775).
Other top performances were turned in by sophomore Morgan Hoang, who tied for third on floor (9.800), and junior Kyla Bryant, who tied for fifth on bars (9.800) and beam (9.775)
Stanford begins conference play next Sunday at Cal at 4 p.m. The meet will be televised by Pac-12 Networks and live scoring can be found at GoStanford.com.
