BERKELEY, Calif. – Salvaging a weekend of competition after poor weather prevented the Cardinal from showing at the Windy City Invitational in Chicago on Saturday, No. 1 Stanford traveled to Berkeley, Calif. and topped the Golden Bears and Air Force.
Stanford recorded a team score of 401.850, followed by Cal with 385.700 and Air Force at 369.400.
Four Cardinal gymnasts competed in the all-around competition, with sophomore Brody Malone capturing the all-around title with a score of 81.900. Freshman Brandon Briones scored an 80.600, followed by Riley Loos (78.850) and Andrew Bitner (76.850).
Briones and Loos each began the competition strong, connecting for career-best scores of 13.900 and 13.700, respectively, on still rings. Sophomore Ian Gunther also hit for a high mark, registering a 13.800 as the Cardinal managed a season-best 68.200 on rings, including Brione's event-winning mark.
Briones managed his second career best in as many events in the next rotation, hitting for a 14.300 on floor to win consecutive event titles. Junior Bryan Perla also eclipsed the 14-point threshold, posting a 14.100 as the leadoff competitor in the Cardinal lineup that ultimately scored a 67.950.
The Cardinal went 1-2 on pommel horse en route to a 65.250 team score, with Joey Ringer capturing the event title with a 13.600. Malone was close behind at 13.550, as he continued his pursuit of the all-around title.
Senior David Jessen highlighted the high bar lineup for Stanford, sticking his set for a 13.650 to win top honors in the event. Briones finished second for the Cardinal, registering a mark of 13.050 as Stanford finished with a 64.450 team score.
Entering as the top team in the nation on vault and parallel bars, Stanford finished the meet with those two rotations. Four Cardinal gymnasts hit for 14-plus points on vault, including Connor Lewis who stuck his vault for a 14.600 to edge Malone (14.550) for the event title. Briones hit for 14.350, while Loos was good for a 14.000 in his first collegiate vault. The Cardinal as a team finished with a mark of 70.500 on vault.
Malone finished the meet strong, hitting for a 14.200 on parallel bars to capture the event title, helping Stanford secure a 65.350 team score in the final rotation.
"It was one of those meets we learn from - it was that bad," head coach Thom Glielmi said. "We counted nine missed routines. Although the team has a lot of potential, we need to know what we are getting from each competition. Malone and Briones were pushing for big start value routines, and we're successful for the most part."
The Cardinal will once again meet Cal next weekend as Stanford hosts the Stanford Open at 7 p.m. No. 2 Oklahoma will also compete in the open, which will be contested in Burnham Pavilion.
