THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Facing off against opponents from No. 11 UCLA, No. 3 USC and No. 9 Texas A&M, sophomore Alexandre Rotsaert won four straight singles matches from Friday to Sunday to reach the Sherwood Cup championship. Rotsaert dropped a tight battle to USC's No. 1 Daniel Cuckierman in the final, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Advancing to the Sherwood Cup title game for the second-straight season, Rotsaert rallied for a three-set 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over UCLA's Govind Nanda. Junior Axel Geller, who reached the semifinal for the second year in a row, was denied an opportunity for a repeat of an all-Stanford championship, as he was topped by Cuckierman, 6-3, 6-3.
Geller and Rotsaert each tallied wins over top-10 opponents to reach the semifinal, with Geller besting UCLA's No. 10 Hady Habib in straight sets, while Rotsaert outlasted Texas A&M's third-ranked Valentin Vacherot, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 6-2.
In doubles play, Geller and Neel Rajesh cruised to the semifinal with victories over UCLA's Drew Baird and Connor Rapp and Texas A&M's Austin Abbrat and Guido Marson, each by a 6-3 margin. Rotsaert and Tomas Kopczynski advanced past UCLA's duo of Eric Hahn and Blaine Hovenier in the opening round, 7-5, but fell in the quarterfinal in a tiebreak.
Geller and Rajesh were tripped up in the semifinal by USC's duo of Cuckierman and Riley Smith, 7-5.
Six singles players in attendance for the Cardinal men's tennis picked up at least one singles victory to open the tournament, with five student-athletes reaching the round of 16 in the main draw..
